Quick answer

Meteora is about 4.5–5 hours from Athens. While the railway to Kalambaka is being repaired, the train runs to Palaiofarsalos with a connecting bus to Kalambaka (about 4h45 in total). There's also a direct daily coach from Athens (about 4h30) and KTEL buses via Trikala. A day trip is possible but long; one night in Kalambaka or Kastraki lets you see the monasteries at sunrise or sunset. Monastery entry is €3 each, €5 at Great Meteoron, cash only.
