Can You Take a Greek Ferry on the Same Day as Your Flight Home?

Why most travelers spend the last night in Athens before an international flight.

Quick answer

It's possible but risky. Strong wind, strikes or delays can cancel or hold ferries for hours, and airlines won't wait. The safe plan is to return to Athens (or the island with your airport) the day before your international flight.

What to know

  • Ferry and flight are separate tickets, so a missed connection is usually your cost.
  • Wind is strongest in July–August; sailing bans are issued at short notice.
  • Strikes are usually announced a few days ahead — check the news before you travel.
  • Piraeus to Athens Airport takes about 1–1.5 hours by metro or taxi; add traffic time.
  • Rafina and Lavrio ports are closer to the airport than Piraeus.

FAQ

How much buffer do I need between a ferry and a flight?

For international flights, ideally one night. At minimum allow 5–6 hours after scheduled arrival, and only with a flexible flight.

Is Rafina better before a flight?

It's around 30 minutes by road from Athens Airport, so it's often easier than Piraeus if your island is served from there.
