Heat & wildfire safety

Emergency or fire: call 112

Next 3 days in Attica

"Fire weather" is our estimate from heat, dry air, wind and days without rain. The official fire-risk level (1–5, 5 = state of alert) is published every day by Civil Protection: civilprotection.gov.gr. Forecast: Open-Meteo.

If you get a 112 wildfire alert

Phones in Greece get emergency messages from 112 in Greek and English, with a loud alarm. If the message tells you to leave, leave.

  1. Leave straight away towards the place the message names. Don't stop to pack or take photos.
  2. Never drive into smoke or towards the fire. If a road is blocked, turn back early.
  3. Follow police and fire service directions; they know which roads are open.
  4. If you're trapped: go to an open area with little vegetation (a beach, a car park, a ploughed field), cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth, and call 112.
  5. In a building: close windows and doors, turn off the air conditioning and gas, fill bathtubs and sinks with water.
  6. Tell your family where you are, and keep your phone charged.

In a heatwave

  • Visit sites early (from opening) or in the evening. Archaeological sites such as the Acropolis can close in the afternoon in a heatwave (in July 2025 it closed 13:00–17:00).
  • Drink water often, even if you're not thirsty; add salt or electrolytes if you sweat a lot.
  • Avoid hiking and long walks between 11:00 and 18:00. Gorges and islands get hotter than the forecast for the town.
  • Watch for heat exhaustion: headache, dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating. Get to shade, drink, cool down. Confusion or no sweating is an emergency: call 112 (ambulance 166).
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car.

Help prevent fires

  • No barbecues, campfires or burning anything outdoors in summer.
  • Don't throw cigarettes on the ground or out of the car window.
  • Don't park on dry grass: a hot exhaust can start a fire.
  • See smoke or flames? Call 112 or the fire service on 199 straight away.
