Short answer

Uber and FreeNow work in Athens, Thessaloniki and main Crete towns. On most islands you use local taxis from the port or town rank, and in summer you book ahead.

In towns the meter must run. Tariff 1 by day, tariff 2 at night (roughly midnight–5 am).

Fixed fares

Airports and ports often post official fixed-fare boards. Check the board before you get in.

Extras are legal

Small surcharges for airport/port pickup, luggage and phone booking are normal.

Get a receipt

Drivers must give a receipt. Note the plate number.

Overcharged?

Call Tourist Police 1571 or report the plate number at the port police.
