Practical utilities

The boring stuff, sorted

Ports, buses and cash — the three things that trip people up most.

Ferry port navigation

Windy day? Check the Meltemi alerts before you leave for the port.

Piraeus

Greece's largest passenger port, 12 km from central Athens. Gates run in a long arc — E1 to E12 — so going to the wrong gate can cost you 30+ minutes.

Getting there

  • • Metro M1 (green line) to Piraeus terminus — exits opposite Gates E5–E7. Metro M3 (blue) from the airport also ends at Piraeus (~60 min, €9).
  • • Tram T6/T7 stops along the port on Akti Poseidonos.
  • • Free port shuttle bus (blue) runs along all gates every ~10–15 min from the metro station.
  • • Taxi from Syntagma ~€20–25; from the airport ~€55–60 (fixed day fare).

Tips

  • • Your ticket or e-ticket shows the gate — check it again the day before; gates can change.
  • • From the metro: E7–E8 are a 3–5 min walk; E1–E3 are 15–20 min; E11–E12 are 20+ min.
  • • Arrive 45–60 min early in summer; ferries close ramps 15 min before departure.
  • • Luggage storage and cafes cluster near the metro (E6–E7).

Gates

  • E1Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, Patmos) & North Aegean (Chios, Lesvos, Samos)
  • E2Crete — Chania/Souda & Heraklion night ferries (ANEK, Minoan)
  • E3Crete (Heraklion, Rethymno) & Kythera; car-ferry parking
  • E4Cruise terminal & some Cyclades departures
  • E5Cruise terminal (Themistokles)
  • E6Western Cyclades & fast boats (Milos, Sifnos, Serifos)
  • E7Central Cyclades — Blue Star & SeaJets (Paros, Naxos, Ios, Santorini, Mykonos)
  • E8Saronic islands — Aegina, Agistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses (hydrofoils & ferries)
  • E9Cyclades conventional (Syros, Tinos, Mykonos) & Saronic car ferries
  • E10Cruise ships & occasional extra sailings
  • E11Cruise terminal (Miaoulis)
  • E12Salamina ferries & small local boats

Rafina

Compact second port of Athens, 20 km from the airport. Fastest route to Andros, Tinos and Mykonos.

Getting there

  • • Taxi from Athens airport ~20 min, ~€30–40.
  • • KTEL Attica bus from the airport (every ~45–60 min) or from Pedion Areos in central Athens (~1h, ~€3).
  • • KTEL buses stop at the top of the hill; walk 5 min down to the quay.

Tips

  • • Rafina is more exposed to the Meltemi than Piraeus — fast boats here are cancelled first.
  • • Ticket offices line the waterfront road; print or save your e-ticket.
  • • Good fish tavernas above the port if your boat is delayed.

Where to go

Heraklion

Crete's main port, walkable from the Venetian harbour and old town. Overnight ferries to Piraeus and fast boats to Santorini and the Cyclades.

Getting there

  • • 10–15 min walk from Lions Square / the old town.
  • • Airport is 5 km east — taxi ~€15–20, city bus No. 78 to the port area.
  • • KTEL long-distance bus station (A) is opposite the port — buses to Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos.

Tips

  • • The Sea of Crete crossing to Santorini is often rough in Meltemi season — take seasickness tablets.
  • • Night ferries leave around 21:00 and arrive at Piraeus ~06:00; book a cabin for real sleep.
  • • Allow 20 min to walk from the port entrance to the east quays with luggage.

Where to go

KTEL bus tips

  1. 1KTEL is a network of regional bus cooperatives — each region has its own website and timetable.
  2. 2Athens has two main terminals: Kifissos (Peloponnese, north, Ionian) and Liosion (Delphi, Meteora direction).
  3. 3Buy tickets at the station kiosk or on the bus on islands; mainland intercity often needs a pre-bought seat.
  4. 4Timetables change seasonally (winter/summer). Double-check the week of travel.
  5. 5On islands, buses meet major ferries — ask the driver for the port stop ('limani').
  6. 6Cash is still king on local buses; carry small notes and coins.
