Visiting the Acropolis: Time Slots, Heat & Tips
By the iLoveGreece editorial team · Last reviewed 2026-11
Quick answer
Book a timed Acropolis ticket on the official hhticket.gr site, arrive for the first slot at 08:00 or for the last two hours before closing, and use the quieter south-east entrance by the Acropolis Museum. The adult ticket is €30 all year; EU citizens under 25 and non-EU visitors under 18 go free with ID. Allow 1.5–2 hours, wear shoes with grip and carry water: there is almost no shade.
Tickets and time slots
- Buy only on hhticket.gr, the Ministry of Culture's site, or at the ticket office. Resellers charge more for the same entry.
- Every ticket has an entry slot. You can stay as long as you like once inside, but you can't enter early.
- Summer slots from about 10:00 to 15:00 sell out days ahead; the first and last slots go fastest.
- Bring ID if you qualify for free or reduced entry: it is checked at the gate.
- The Acropolis Museum is a separate ticket and a separate building at the foot of the hill.
Which entrance to use
- Main (west) entrance: on Dionysiou Areopagitou, the closest to Thissio and Monastiraki. Most tour groups use it, so queues build from 09:00.
- South-east entrance: next to the Theatre of Dionysus, a few minutes from Akropoli metro (line 2) and the Acropolis Museum. Usually quieter.
- Visitors with reduced mobility can ask at the entrance for the lift up the north side of the rock.
Heat, crowds and what to bring
- In July and August, the Ministry of Culture can close the site in the hottest hours during heatwaves. Check the news the day before.
- Marble paths are polished smooth and slippery: trainers or walking sandals with grip, not flip-flops.
- Bring at least 1 litre of water, a hat and sunscreen. There are water fountains, but little shade.
- Large backpacks and tripods are a hassle; travel light.
- Drones and flying are banned over all archaeological sites.
A simple route on the rock
- Propylaea (the monumental gateway) → Temple of Athena Nike → Parthenon → Erechtheion with the Caryatid porch.
- The Caryatids on the Erechtheion are copies; five originals stand in the Acropolis Museum.
- On the way down, the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus are on the south slope, included in the ticket.
- For the classic photo of the whole Acropolis, walk 15 minutes to Filopappou Hill afterwards.
