Arriving on a Greek Island by Ferry: Port to Hotel by Bus, Taxi or Transfer

What to do when your ferry lands: island ports, buses timed to ferries, how taxis work at the port, Santorini's Athinios, Mykonos's two ports, and when to pre-book a transfer.

Quick answer

On most islands the port is in or next to the main town: in Naxos, Paros and many others you can walk to your hotel. Where the port is outside town, buses usually wait for the big ferries, and taxis queue at the quay but run out fast when a large ferry lands. Santorini's Athinios port is about 30 minutes below Fira, and Mykonos ferries mostly use the New Port, north of town. Arriving late or in August, pre-book a transfer.

Buses

  • On busy islands, buses meet the big ferries. They wait for conventional ferries; a late fast boat may arrive after the last bus.
  • Buy tickets at the kiosk or on board, usually in cash, and have small notes ready.

Taxis

  • Island taxi numbers are limited. When a big ferry lands, the queue at the port can be long.
  • Taxis use the meter or a fixed fare for set routes; agree the price before you set off if there's no meter.
  • Show the driver your hotel's name in Greek letters or a map pin: many addresses on islands have no street number.

When to pre-book a transfer

  • Arriving after about 22:00, when buses have stopped.
  • Santorini in summer: Athinios has few taxis and a steep road up.
  • With small children, lots of luggage or a group: a booked car is often cheaper than two taxis.
