Balos vs Elafonisi: Crete's Famous Lagoons

Which of western Crete's lagoons to visit, how to get there and when to go.

By the iLoveGreece editorial team · Last reviewed 2026-11

Quick answer

Balos is a turquoise lagoon on Crete's north-west tip, reached by day boat from Kissamos port (usually with a stop at Gramvousa island) or by a rough dirt road and a steep 20–30 minute walk. Elafonisi, in the south-west, has pink-tinged sand and very shallow water, reached by a long paved mountain road. Both are protected areas and very busy in July and August: go early or late, or outside peak season.

Balos tips

  • The boat from Kissamos is the easiest way and usually stops at Gramvousa's Venetian fortress.
  • Driving: the dirt road from Kaliviani has a small entry fee and is rough on hire cars; check your insurance.
  • The famous view is from the path down. The walk back up is hot and steep: water and shoes.
  • Strong wind can make the boat trip rough or cancel it.

Elafonisi tips

  • The pink colour comes from tiny shells; it's strongest at the water's edge.
  • Walk across the shallows to the island side for quieter spots.
  • Don't take sand or shells: the area is protected (Natura 2000) and fines apply.
  • Arrive before 10:00 in summer, or after 16:00 when day-trippers leave.

FAQ

Which is better, Balos or Elafonisi?

Balos for the most spectacular view and a boat day; Elafonisi for families and calm, shallow water.

Can you visit Balos and Elafonisi in one day?

It's possible by car but rushed: they're at opposite ends of western Crete. Better on separate days.

Is the Balos road OK for a rental car?

It's a rough dirt road. Many rental contracts don't cover damage there, so the boat is the safer choice.
