Ferry or Flight Between Greek Islands?

When flying saves time and when ferries are better.

Quick answer

Take the ferry for islands in the same group, such as the Cyclades, where trips take a few hours. Fly for long distances, such as Athens to Rhodes or Crete, or between island groups, usually via Athens. Ferries let you see the sea and carry more luggage; flights are faster and avoid wind cancellations, but small planes have lower baggage limits.

When the ferry wins

  • Island-hopping within the Cyclades, Dodecanese or Ionian islands.
  • Small islands without an airport.
  • Travelling with a car, a lot of luggage or pets.
  • Overnight ferries to Crete save a hotel night.

When flying wins

  • Long distances: Rhodes, Crete, Corfu, Kos.
  • Moving between groups (Crete to Corfu, Rhodes to Santorini), usually through Athens.
  • In strong wind seasons, when a cancelled ferry would ruin a tight plan.
  • Compare door-to-door time: airports on islands can be far from the town.

FAQ

Is it cheaper to fly or take the ferry in Greece?

Deck-class ferry tickets are usually cheaper, but flights booked early can cost the same as a fast ferry.

Can you fly between Greek islands?

Some islands have direct flights to each other, especially Crete, Rhodes and the Dodecanese. Most others connect through Athens.

Are ferries cancelled often?

Mostly in strong wind, more often in July–August (meltemi) and winter. Leave a spare day before your flight home.
