How Many Days in Athens? 1, 2 or 3-Day Plans
By the iLoveGreece editorial team · Last reviewed 2026-11
Quick answer
Two full days is right for most first visits to Athens: the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum on day one, the Ancient Agora, Plaka and Monastiraki on day two. With three days, add the National Archaeological Museum or a day trip to Cape Sounion, Delphi or an island. If you're only passing through to the islands, one well-planned day still covers the highlights.
One day
- Acropolis at opening (book the 08:00 slot), then the Acropolis Museum.
- Lunch in Koukaki or Plaka.
- Afternoon: Plaka and Anafiotika lanes, then the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus.
- Sunset from Filopappou Hill or a rooftop in Monastiraki.
Two days
- Day 1 as above, but keep the Ancient Agora for day 2.
- Day 2: Ancient Agora and Roman Agora in the morning, Monastiraki market, the Central Market on Athinas Street.
- Afternoon: National Archaeological Museum (plan 2–3 hours) or the Benaki Museum.
- Evening: Psyrri or Pangrati for dinner, Lycabettus Hill at sunset.
Three days or more
- Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon at sunset, along the Athens Riviera.
- Delphi: a long but rewarding day trip, about 2.5 hours each way.
- An island day: Aegina (closest), Hydra (car-free) or Poros by boat from Piraeus.
- A beach afternoon: the tram to the coast, or Lake Vouliagmeni.
Good to know
- In summer, sightsee before 12:00 and after 17:00, and rest in between.
- Most central sights are walkable; use the metro for longer hops.
- Many state museums close one day a week or earlier in winter: check hours before you go.
FAQ
Is one day in Athens enough?
For the Acropolis, the museum and Plaka, yes. Two days lets you add the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum and a relaxed evening.
Should I stay in Athens before or after the islands?
Either works. Staying at the end lowers the risk of a cancelled ferry making you miss your flight home.
What's the best day trip from Athens?
Cape Sounion at sunset is the easiest. Delphi is the most impressive. Aegina or Hydra if you want an island.
