Is Greece Safe for Tourists?

How safe Greece is for travelers, solo women and families, common scams, pickpockets, heat and sea safety.

By the iLoveGreece editorial team · Last reviewed 2026-11

Quick answer

Yes. Greece has low violent crime and is safe for solo travellers, families and women travelling alone. The real risks are everyday ones: pickpockets on the Athens metro and at busy sights, phones lifted from café tables, summer heat, the sea and island roads. In any emergency call 112, which works in English and from any phone.

Petty crime and scams

  • Pickpockets work metro line 1 (Piraeus–Monastiraki–Omonia) and crowded spots like Monastiraki and the Acropolis entrance. Keep bags zipped and in front.
  • Don't leave a phone on a café table by the street; it's the most common theft.
  • Bar scam in central Athens: a friendly stranger suggests a bar, then the bill is huge. Pick your own places.
  • Use licensed taxis or a taxi app; agree nothing in cash with drivers who approach you at the airport or port.

Heat and wildfires

  • July and August heatwaves can pass 40°C. Sightsee early and late, rest at midday, drink more than you think you need.
  • During wildfires, Greece sends emergency alerts from 112 to every phone in the area. Follow them straight away.
  • Don't light barbecues or throw cigarettes outdoors in summer; fines are heavy.

Sea and roads

  • The summer meltemi wind can make the sea rough on north-facing Cycladic beaches. Swim where it's calm and never alone off rocks.
  • Most beaches have no lifeguard. Watch for sea urchins on rocky shores; water shoes help.
  • Quad bike and scooter crashes are the biggest danger to visitors on the islands. Wear a helmet, avoid driving at night and never drink and drive.
  • Roads are narrow and winding; goats and potholes appear without warning.

Solo and women travellers

  • Greece is generally relaxed and welcoming for women travelling alone. Normal city sense applies late at night.
  • Taxis from apps let you share the trip with a friend.
  • Tap water is drinkable in Athens and most towns; on small islands many people drink bottled water.

FAQ

Is Athens safe at night?

Central areas like Plaka, Koukaki, Syntagma and Psyrri are busy and fine at night. Around Omonia and parts of Exarchia, stay on lit main streets and keep valuables away.

Do I need travel insurance for Greece?

It isn't required for most visitors, but it's strongly recommended. EU visitors should also carry their EHIC card.

Is the tap water safe to drink?

In Athens and most mainland towns, yes. On some small islands the water is desalinated or hard; locals often buy bottled water.
