Cash or Card in Greece? Taxis, Tips & Receipts
Do you need cash in Greece? Card acceptance in shops and taxis, ATM fees, taxi apps and receipts.

Quick answer
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and taxis and shops are required to take card payments. Carry some cash for tips, small kiosks, village tavernas and beach bars. Use bank ATMs rather than standalone machines to avoid high fees, and always decline paying in your home currency.
Paying
- Contactless works in most shops, cafés and on public transport ticket machines.
- Taxis must accept card; tell the driver at the start.
- When a card machine asks 'EUR or your currency', choose EUR.
Taxis
- Use official taxis (yellow in Athens) or a taxi app such as FREENOW or Uber (which books licensed taxis).
- Check the meter is on; fixed fares apply from Athens airport to the centre.
- On islands, taxis are few in summer — book port/airport transfers ahead.
Receipts
- Businesses must give a receipt. If none appears, you can ask for one.
